FAQ

What is accent modification

When people learn a second language, it is not uncommon for them to have an accent which is simply a deviation from a norm.  In other words, they sound different from a native speaker because they use language features from their first (second) language. Accent modification is the process of identifying and changing the speech features that impact their oral English skills. By adding accuracy to a non-native English speaker’s sounds, intonation, and rhythm they can modify their accent.  The reason we can make accent modification possible is because of our knowledge and expertise in linguistics and adult skill development.

How long does it take

The answer depends on your:

  • Goals – changing sounds that impede understanding will take less time than acquiring an American accent
  • Speech – the average Spanish speaker, for example, has more speech features that need to be addressed than the average Korean speaker
  • Learning style – individuals who process information aurally typically learn faster than verbal learners, who are tied to the written word; kinesthetic learners are typically quicker at making adjustments to articulate sounds
  • Motivation – individuals who have specific reasons, like job interviewing, career advancement etc, are typically more successful because they are more driven
  • Time-Management – like any new skill, the more time you spend on it the faster the learning process; those who meet two times per week generally improve faster than those who have instruction only once per week
